Many people try to lose weight. Some just want to look better for the summer, others are fighting for better health and well-being. Losing weight is not easy and many people gain weight soon after losing it.
What makes it difficult to maintain a healthy weight? Scientists from the University of Sydney say that soft white bread and jasmine rice should take the blame.
People usually aim to lose weight. And when that goal is achieved, they return at least a little to the way they eat and exercise. They want to stop losing weight, but they also want to maintain what they already have. Which is harder than it seems.
The scientists analyzed data from the global study from 2013 to 2018 on over 2,000 participants. They were all classified as overweight or obese and were at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. They all wanted to lose weight. During the first part of the study, participants consumed meal replacement shakes to achieve rapid weight loss in 8 weeks.
The second part of the study included researchers who compared the results of a diet with a high level of protein with a low GI and moderate protein with a moderate GI protein.
Some participants maintained an intense exercise regimen, while others exercised less. Despite all these efforts, almost all participants regained at least part of their weight. However, those who had a diet with food that has a high glycemic index (GI) gained significantly more weight.
Professor Brand Miller, one of the study's authors, said: "I think we've all experienced fattening in our adult lives and many of us have tried all kinds of diets to recover over time. This new study tells us that choosing bread and potatoes and low-GI rice to make it easier to win over bulges. "
The weight gain observed in this study is not only related to appearance. All of these participants were close to developing type 2 diabetes. This is an extremely dangerous game and watching their weight should be one of their top priorities.
However, the researchers found that at least some of the participants simply did not know that many of the foods they ate were low in fiber and had a high GI. Soft white and brown breads, potatoes and jasmine rice have a high GI. However, the good news is that many of these foods have a low GI version. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people.
Type 2 diabetes is a dangerous condition. And it's up to you to avoid it. Lose weight and maintain a healthy diet afterwards. It’s okay if you eat dessert or french fries sometimes. Just don't make it a habit.
